[Vwdiesel] Direction of coolant flow in radiator

this is from memory, but i'm 95% sure it's right. our
vanagon has the water coming into the radiator at the
top and return at the bottom.
and i THINK every other car vw or not is the same. if
the water pump was trying to pull water from the top
of the radiator then if the water level were only a
little low then the pump would suck air and there goes
the engine overheating. so i HIGHLY doubt that any
engine is set up that way.
looking in my bentley i see on page 19.5 where it
shows it as you say. i think that's just an error and
someone didn't doublecheck it well enough.
did you bleed the radiator using the little valve at
the top of the passenger hand side? it's the highest
point in the system and if you don't take care of it
then it would have an airlock. other than that or a
bad thermostat or waterpump then maybe a clogged up
system or radiator? if you have a thermometer and can
measure temps at different points on the radiator to
see how it's working.
good luck!
