Yes we the DIY gang --pump gang -- can make these pumps work in
most cases.

Say that you measured pump pressure to be 20 psi at 1000 rpm. and it came
right back up to say 43 psi when you feed it oil fuel mixture. I suggest
to give the pump a Diesel Purge treatment and test again. To see if the pump
vanes are sticking. Most likely they are worn a bit and we now go on to the next
phase.

Very important observation : These pumps were calibrated and designed to
use # 2 OLD diesel .--- That diesel was of a higher viscosity than some of the
crap we are fed now. Can a DIY measure viscosity ? -----YES.

Take a look under rudimentary testing of fuel. Can a DIY recalibrate the pump
for skinny fuel ? --yes.

Viscosity is important to vane pump , regulator valve and orifice. All these are
calibrated to give the proper injection timing. (dynamic).

It was my hope to have done all these test on the Test engine in the yard.
But due to medical problems I never got to fire up that engine.(in 2004).

For the really sick (pun intended) pumps I suggest a trip to the shop or "Hillbilly TUNING".

Note I say TUNING ----not timing but that is a long way from now.

Do I have a mental picture of Doyt Echelberger ? ---wow indeed ---had for a long time.
If it was not for the help from Doyt ---"pump gang senior" I would not be able
to write this. So if this gets you going thank the whole gang --not just me.

I am amazed every day how well a mechanical control system can work for
twenty years and 300 000 Km trouble free.

Can a DIY change vanes ? ---in general ? NO NO NO.

Next time we will take a close look at the control valve ---interesting little
bugger.

Hagar.
