[Vwdiesel] injection pump check valves

Last week when I was getting the TD installed in my vanagon, I had to use the 
injector lines from my 86 NA jetta.  The lines on the jetta were from an 
ecodiesel and had the bend to go around the turbo.  The check valves also had to 
be swapped as the ones from the jetta were much longer with shorter lines, and 
the ones from the junk diesel engine were short valves with longer lines.  I 
was meticulously careful and clean.  I have swapped check valves before.  When 
I got the jetta back together I bled the lines (slightly loosened), and 
started her up.  The only things I changed were the lines and the check valves.  
Ever since she has had a much rougher idle and a decent waddle to the engine.  My 
assumption is that one of the check valves is not functioning properly.  
Today I went out, started her up, and carefully loosened one line at a time.  The 
drop in rpm was uniform for each of the four cylinders, and there was no air 
in any lines.  Any easy way to tell which valve?  Any other suggestions?  Did I 
muck up the timing by reefing on the check valves (rotate pump)?
