I had an 1979 Rabbit with the 1.5L diesel.
This was my first VW and needed a new thrust bearing. Since I had to
tear it apart anyway, I decided to replace all bearings and re-ring it.
When I asked the parts counter for an oil pump, he asked me whether or
not I had a vacuum pump or not. My car did not! It didn't have power
brakes. There was just a flat cover plate over the hole where one would
go. This was the only difference in oil pumps as I had found out. This
needed an oil pump with a gear on it.
Very strange.
