[Vwdiesel] Crank Timing Gear Question- '84 1.6NA

I have a JK series engine, 1.6NA that was in a wreck.  It looks like the
timing gear key on the crank shaft was sheared resulting in a bent valve
or two.  Anyway, I'm not familiar with this timing gear lash-up as I
have only worked on the earlier engines with a woodruff key.  The keyway
is on the outer lip of the crank shaft for this '84 engine.  The keyway
points straight up at TDC (nice touch)!

 

Does this gear have a special key that is separate from the gear or is
the gear cast with a key in it?  I need to get this solved so I can get
the engine up and running!  Any help is appreciated!
