Yes it certainly is. Close tolerance honing seems a thing of the past at
your average machine shop. Now for good work it is almost a necessity to go
to a specialty shop that deals in engines exclusively, and even then...

Depends on the pistons. Forged get fit tighter (.003), cast looser(.006). I
know some guys go even looser than that, but with short skirt pistons these
days, you pretty much need some semblance of fit. I could see ten thou being
good with cast long skirt pistons and a good single compression ring like a
total seal.
That's for stock car motors, don't try this at home....
