[Vwdiesel] super smoke

It was more on the lines of dark grey and it did smell like diesel. I'll
have to check all those area's. Any good suggestions as to where to send
the pump off too for a reliable rebuild?

What color smoke? I'll assume black, and that sounds like to much fuel for
the air.
Maybe the exhaust path is partially obstructed with rust/mouse nest,
etc....or, maybe the induction path is partially obstructed. And you could
check the air filter for being wet, oil clogged, or insect nest/mouse nest.
My 85 TD blows black smoke when it put my foot in it at operating temp.
Sometimes it blows some blue smoke on cold start.
My na 82 blew (past tense) white smoke when it skipped a notch in the
timing belt. It is RIP.
