With a 5 thou blade in cylinder and piston slides right through --on its own
weight ? NO
good for a diesel VW. You need a bigger piston------ well you DIY's gets
the drift ?---if NOT ?.
Leave it ALL to a good shop. ----BUT make sure you tell them to fit on the
THIGHT side of specks.

I thought you were refering to a quick and easy way to check while the
head was off. :-) This method would require pulling the engine nearly
clear down. Once you suspect it that much the the wise thing is to pull
the engine and do those intermediate bearings too. With an assembled
engine, the easiest way to check is to use a bore gauge and measure
the bore. The pistons wear very little so you can use basically the new
specs for the piston, subtract that from the measured bore and get your
clearance. You can also check for taper, out of round and all which is
harder to do with a feeler gauge and also doesn't require a tear down
just to measure. :-)
That's why I bought a pair of bore gauges. Just haven't had need to use
them since! :-P
