Well, I went out and tried my TD vanagon with the boot disconnected from 
turbo to intake manifold, to effectively run it N/A.  I can still hear the turbo 
spool, so it isn't an entirely foolproof test, but I think Bob in NY gets the 
prize.  It still did it's weird thing and seems to be load dependent, as there 
was obviously no boost.  Boost is also load dependant, so the coincidence is 
easily confusing.  I will either swap out rod bearings, or swap engines and 
rebuild that one.  Either way, it is a bit frustrating, but certainly less than 
having a peep hole at the engine internals.  Thanks to all for all the input.  
I will post further progress.
