  IT only should if you have burrs on the teeth or it won't fully engage
(slips/grinds).  Otherwise you should get by.

  Yup, or dropping the engine.  ;-)

  Yes you can but have you priced a starter drive/bendix for a Bosch 
starter?  If it wants to grind, it's probably not worth putting it off.  Of 
course you might keep the old starter drive and use it but then it's 
worn, the ring gear is worn so it might tend to grind where the new 
one may not.  Bolt it in and see.  :-)

  Try the new starter and see if it engages ok.  Look for burrs on the 
ring gear first.  It's not uncommon to have about 3 worn areas on a ring 
gear.  It's where the engine comes to rest so it's where the starter 
gear is always engaging.
