I don't think a pleated cone is the way to go, unless it also has an outer housing to 
dampen the noise. Every car I've heard with a pleated cone system is significantly 
louder than stock, and these were gas engines (VW 16V, Suzuki 16V). I suspect it 
would be worse with a diesel. When I had my '85 TD, I didn't find it too bad; my 
current '85 NA is much noisier. My nieghbour just finished swapping a TD into an '85 
Jetta body, and it seems quite quiet. At what speed(s) is the noise worst on yours?
