[Vwdiesel] Water separator(?)more advice needed...

OK, Just got in and was gonna see about more backyard mechanic temp. repairs
to my water separator before heading down the highway first thing tomorrow,
but it's raining hard here and no room to pull the thing inside.

Question:

Is there room to put a long and or large plastic cable-tie/ty-wrap
completely around the top and bottom of the box, ((between the box and the
floor of the car)), and over the cap to prevent it from falling off? Mine
feels like it's just barely hanging on there by the skin of it's virtual
teeth. I've capped off the lil' drain tube for the moment. Car has been
parked 24 hours and no drips into my pan sitting underneath it.

Anyone think a little teflon tape around the large threads on the box would
help aid in keeping the cap on there. (if the cap isn't cracked)

I wish I could give more info, but all I got was a fleeting glance (<1
second) at it last night as I removed it and found diesel gushing out all
over me and the ground.

AFAICT, the cap is broken off from the threaded rod. I don't know much more
than that.

If it's not raining tomorrow night, I'll have another quickie look at it and
see if there is any rod remaining up inside the separator and/or if the cap
is cracked. Wonder if a piece of saran wrap and a rubber band will hold the
flow of diesel while I look at the cap under the light?!
