That is what I did when I installed my rebuilt pump. But I used my brake
vacuum pump to pull the fuel through and when it came out in a nice stream
with little air I stopped.  Worked like a charm.

What I do is, disconnect return line at the pump and connect a clear line
and suck on the tube till I see fuel in the clear line.  Works good.  Diesel
Oil tastes bad so watch for fuel in the line.
