[Vwdiesel] Hillbilly TUNING ? ---( is it valid ? ---bet yourbutts. )

To time a diesel by ear is also no where near as obvious as turning the
distributor on a gas engine... In order to measure power / fuel consumption
between each "adjustment" takes time / miles, and most don't have unlimited
time to get back into the engine, take off all the peripherals needed to
access the pump adjusting bolts, loosen, turn, tighten, and run for another
500 miles to check it only to repeat an unlimited number of times until it's

"right"... just unrealistic. Like Mr. Hansen, I have had no issues setting
it with a dial indicator and have been more than happy with the performance
and the fuel consumption. Its one thing to make minor adjustments if there
are problems, but don't give the impression that this method is the first
choice.

Svend.
James understands, but chooses to disagree.
To take a big step backwards and time an engine by ear, feel and sight is
quite frankly ridiculous. That works okay on my model T, but a timing light
is still better on that too, and it tells me things my ears won't.
The proper tools to time a diesel engine exist, are plentiful and
comparatively cheap.
I happen to have such tools, and have been setting Bosch injection pumps on
a volks to 1.00 mm for years and years.
You can cut down a tree with a pocketknife, but WHY when an axe or a
powersaw are available.
I know you have a passion for the unconventional, but for heaven's sake, I
time the pump once in two years, it takes fifteen minutes. My stuff gets
high mileage and does well on power. The A2 td Jetta I sold now has
580000kms on it, and going strong. This would be original engine, rings
bearings, nothing other than proper maintenance and timing with a <gasp>
dial indicator to 1.00 mm.
So put your socks back on, and realize that the Hillbilly way is just the
hard way, and quite frankly, for a beginner, a good way to potentially screw
stuff up.

-James
