Heh. That is, until they go into surge and spin themselves into
oblivion......
I'm sure that some VNTs are just fine, but VW blew it on the
sizing/construction of the one used on the TDIs. Way too close to the surge
line on the compressor map, and that with stock configuration and low
altitudes. Make some performance mods and/or drive in the mountains, and you
had best learn to modulate the throttle at lower RPMs lest you grenade the
turbo shaft. Ever see an actual vs requested boost graph on one of those,
particularly one with an uncorked exhaust? Overshoot, undershoot, repeat.
I'll stick with the wastegated version on my A3, thanks. :-))
