I did one for a friend, 90 Jetta, NA, A/C, PS. After removal of A/C. Left
the 90 amp alt where it was on the upper through bolt, but removed the dinky
brace that fixed it in position, along with compressor and idler bracketry,
let it swing down as far as possible (after compressor removed). Found
extension pully off another alt, plus some washers to make it line up with
the inner (A/C) pulley.
Then made a "Push rod" of threaded rod to come up from the through bolt that
holds the power steering pump bracket to bottom of the compressor bracket.
Fabricated a sleeve with a hole in it for the rod to fit in to, brazed it
in, then at the alternator end, used an old fitting for an after market
motorcycle windshield, to make the right angle to the alternator lower hole.
Nuts on each side of this fitting, through which the threaded rod passed,
allowed adjustment of belt tension. It's got over 100,000 on it and still
working fine. Had to try a few belts to find one that would stay, one of
those narrow cogged belts avail. at most FLAPS.
I could probably get him to photograph it and send you the picture. He's
about 800 miles from here.
