[Vwdiesel] Fuel Tank Sabotage!

Yes, LIGHT grease or oil, that's part of the reason why the sillycone and
triflow work so well at colder temps. In a fit of winter preparedness, I
sprayed lubriplate aerosol can grease into the door and trunk locks one
winter years ago ... fine until it was -35 to -40. then the locks would not
turn because the grease was too stiff. Called myself a few names that
day.... blasted with ether can to get them to move, then thinned it out with
wd-40. I use a product called Fluid Film now. No trouble, not a real shit
hot lubricant but not that bad, completely prevents corrosion, enviro
friendly, can works when cold, okay to get into eyes and skin (like doesn't
burn like some stuff when working overhead) and not very flammable. Been
into this stuff for ten or so years, and I quite like it. It really coats
and prevents corrosion, and salt is the enemy in winter regarding door
locks... and everything else for that matter.
Silicone spray is great, but banned from my shop for painting reasons...

I wonder if Vaseline or grease pumped into the locks would
prevent freezing insert key and wipe a few times to clear
xs. Smearing on door seals would work too???
Although locks DO come new with a dab of really light grease on on
then pins and tumbler, I don't think packing in vaseline would be a good
idea. (NO! not KY either!)
A big part of the problem is dirt. That's where WD, Triflow, etc helps.
It thins out the gobby grease and washes some of it and the dirt out.
Ideally you'd want to disassemble, clean and relube with a dab of thin
grease or even the Vaseline then and reassemble.
Best thing I've seen to prevent sticking/freezing door seals to the jamb,
is to spray a film of silicone on the seals and wipe. That was part of
our "winterizing" package at the dealer. Works VERY well.
