Best is engine assembly grease, like lubriplate engine assembly grease. It
sticks around, and doesn't take up too much space when it isn't supposed to.
Good point about the slippery snake oil and high viscosity multigrade oils,
they have no place as an assembly lube anyway. Good thing on camshafts is
the molybdenum based cam assembly lube... cams have a special life all to
themselves compared to everything else. Good thing too is to prime the
sysytem with the oil pump first, or at the very least, when you have the
pump apart, put a few dabs of assembly grease into it so it primes on the
first few spins easily.

Local aircraft engine overhauler uses a mix of stp, lubriplate, and non
detergent oil as an assembly lube. The problem with using just straight
oil (he feels anyways) is that if the engine sets for any length of time
after assembly with straight oil that it tends to leak out of the
bearings leaving a dry bearing for the first start. A word of caution
on STP and other friction reducers. Don't get them anywheres you need a
bit of friction. Never use STP on the cylinder walls or rings, they
will never seat properly. A former employer had a customer who was a
dealer for an oil inhancer, Slick 50 I think, he decided to use it in
his Cessna 210. Seems the spring/drum style starter drive requires a
certain amount of friction to work and the snake oil done like
advertised. Put the neatest golden brown friction eleminating coating
on the drum. So be careful with the stuff.
