Local aircraft engine overhauler uses a mix of stp, lubriplate, and non
detergent oil as an assembly lube. The problem with using just straight
oil (he feels anyways) is that if the engine sets for any length of time
after assembly with straight oil that it tends to leak out of the
bearings leaving a dry bearing for the first start.
I've always used a film of moly grease and maybe a little oil on most
everything, including piston skirts. Oil only, maybe on cylinder walls
but I keep the rings dry (rather than soaked in oil) since my dealings
with Total Seal. Seems to work.
Had a head I'd assembled, get put on a block with OBEN down
(head gasket) and they drove it at least 100 miles with no oil to the
head. When I inspected it all looked fine. So fine I pondered for a
second or two the possibilities of running without oil to the head! ;-)
