  Sounds like you first tapped into a hot, dash light circut and were getting 

your ground by backfeeding through the lights.  Best, simple??? ground 
I found was a screw just inside one of the switch blanks on the dash.  
There's a mounting screw for the dash there, runs parallel to the dash 
just to make it less easy to get to.
  With the difficulty you're having finding a ground, it may just be Murphy 
or you might take a good look at the battery to body connection.  
Cleaned that up on Dad's pu last night and took care of a flickering 
gp light and a couple other little oddities.
