The diesel engine was only offered in '81-83. The 81 and 82 were four
speeds, all 83 were 5 speeds. The '87 could be converted to any diesel vw engine
with parts scavenged from a junk diesel vanagon.
Quite frankly there is probably $2000+ worth of parts on a complete '87
vanagon, if dismantled and auctioned on ebay. The stock 2.1 waterboxer parts
bring high prices if in good shape. For perspective I recently auctioned two
decent used 2.1 L heads for a total of $380.
The major components involved in the swap are the tranny bellhousing and
starter, flywheel, oil pan, oil pickup tube, engine cariier bars, brackets and
mounts, and hoses. I currently have an '83 that I put a 1.6TD into. I am very
pleased with the results. Shawn's site has a plethora of pictures of most
aspects of the diesel vanagon.
