In these United States, the Federal Highway Administration has
requirements- 
Boy do they have requirements.  One of these "thou shalts" is bicycle
accommodation with all new roadways and major reconstruction projects.
In addition, FHWA has a rather large chunk of change that must be spent
on 
Non-traditional projects- such as bike/pedestrian paths and aesthetic
enhancements.

There is movement in this direction and it works rather well in
urbanized
Areas.  Out in the rural areas, bicycling doesn't cut much of a swath.
Distances are too great.  We have a long ways to go before matching the 
European model for multi-modal transportation.  It seems to be directly
related to population density and energy cost.

I do miss  that bicycle  culture. ---I have the bike ---but Cars will
not respect us.

My advice to my American friends ?    make the lanes NOW ?    I see
those bikes with small
diesels.------in Denmark shit did they ever go ?.   yeah DIESELS   and
they had a very
special sound pattern ---smaller cc  for one thing -----mine was a 50 cc
gasser.

In Denmark they were called  "A Knallert"  ---no I can not translate.

or so.

Mine had a steel roller on the rear wheel ----and it would go ----no
shit . Crappy part was
that it had to have those insane Danish  Licence Plates -------look up
one and you will know.

Motorcycle   ?   ----but it could still be driven on the bicycle path.
