The article contained a link to the lung association report. The
link only led to the lung association's site, and it took a few more
jumps to come up with a table of links to the (alleged) scientific
reports on which the lung association based its press release, upon
which the newspaper article was based, or more likely cribbed.

The white paper, as well as the report on the methodology, will
probably yield the meat of the story. "Fact sheets" might be
legitimate summaries, or just talking points for flacks.
The original newspaper article was interesting in that it wasn't
the flat-out condemnations we had to repudiate not that long ago. It
actually held that there is hope for redeeming Diesels, and
acknowledged that a large part of the problem is American fuel, not
something inherent to compression ignition engines.
Remember, it wasn't all that long ago that CARB was dead set on
banning Diesel engines, period, and the EPA was taking it seriously.
And that the original 1950's era report cited by the Health Effects
Institute upon which CARB based its conclusions didn't factor in
variables like whether the victims smoked.
