Ahhh, don't underestimate the ability of a crooked businessman to take
advantage of the consumer! ;-) A few years back the government (so I
was told) made a demand that all floorcovering be sold by the square
foot. Since wood and tile were sold that way, it was "unfair and misleading"

to the conusmer, to sell carpet adn vinyl sheet goods by the square yard
(9 square feet for those of you in Rio Linda.) ;-) Although most people
were
ignorant of what a sqare yard really was, they actually had a good
understanding
of what size it really was and how many it took to carpet a house.
In comes square foot pricing. Changes all the rates and was a nuisance
at best... Or was it? I was complaining to a retailer about it (as an
installer)
and he loved it! I didn't like it as I charge for how much carpet it takes
to do
the job regardless of how much goes on the floor vs in the garbage or rolled
up in the attic. It still has to be handled, carried and wrestled. With the
current wave (then, not anymore it seems) of people whining about being
charged for a couple yards "not installed" I was afraid they'd REALLY
start whining about "this square foot and that square foot" lying about
when I get done. He LOVED the idea because customers have a fit if
you raise the price by $1/yd. But nobody complains if you only raise it
$.11/ft! Prices took a sudden jump.
BTW, for those of you who know/knew or "care" we're closing our retail
carpet store on the 15th of January. Maybe I'll find a life!
    Loren
