There are two types of trailer brake systems:
Electric, and servo actuated hydraulic.
The electric is simple and reliable, but more complicated
to setup, and the servo brakes, also known as surge braking,
is dead easy, since it's self contained, but sometimes disconcerting
to drive.
This is all consumer level stuff that you'd likely tow a car with, not
including any commercial stuff, like air brakes, etc.
