[Vwdiesel] Ran out of fuel?-what to do?

Happens to my 87 jetta from time to tyime. I installed one of those outboard
in line squeeze bulbs in the supply line just before the fillter. any time
it wont start off the blocks, I give it a few squeezes and away she goes..
Seems to be more of a problem when parked facing up hill with low fuel in tank.
