But, I wish VW had something like Mercedes 5 cyl diesel have: a neat 
little built-in priming pump.


  Yeah but that's because the Mercedes' pumps are almost non priming 
although they are self priming.  They take a LOT of cranking as I recall.  
  Simplest way to get one going after its run out of fuel is as stated, pull 
the outlet banjo fitting (NA pumps) and pour the pump full then replace.  
If the lines are completely drained, as in when things have been opened 
up for a few day, compressed air to the tank with the return line and the 
bleed on the filter housing (older ones) or the inlet line off until fuel 
flows. 
Messy but that combined with a filled pump and it only takes a couple 
of revolutions to start.
  Loosening the injector lines will show if fuel's flowing to them but really 

won't speed up the bleeding process.
