Actually, try moving the defrost lever just a tad to the left with eh motor
off, but key on so you can hear the fan.  The zone where the switch is must
be very small, as mine shut that off with the slide around 1/4" or so from
full defrost.

I unplugged the compressor but the fan still comes on.

Unplugging the compressor works well, and it's simple.  I did that every
winter with my A2 Jetta... has to as it was veerrrrry cold in there in
winter with the rad fan running continuous..
