I would guess the bushings that hold the steering rack to the sub-frame are shot. They are rubber and rot away from the oil and
heat near the exhaust. Have someone crank the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the steering rack under the hood,
see if it is moving side to side. New polyurethane bushings work well.
