I didn't see a reply to your query anywhere, but to find out if it is turbo, you will look on the driver's side of the engine where you should be able to see the exhaust system connect to the engine.  If it just goes into a manifold (collecting casting) it is NA, if the pipe goes into a round casting which is bolted to the manifold (collecting casting), that is the turbo.  It will also have a similar aluminum piece attatched to the round cast iron piece (where the exhaust pipe goes in), and the aluminim piece will be connected by a hose to the air cleaner and the hose from the aluminum scroll (like a conch shell) goes to the inlet manifold, also located on the driver's side.

You can bet a TD Synchro for $1,500 Euros would be beyond our wildest dreams on this side of the ocean.  We just paid $15,000 Cdn for an '87 gasser Westy (which was going to be 2.5TDI, but now going Audi 2.2 turbo gas)!!  I am green with envy.
