Scott, Unless you want to chop/chop, the only speakers that will fit in
the back shelves and in the front are as you have noted. The fronts
must have magnets that will fit (some of the new biggies won't) and some
tweeters stick up too high making your dash grills ill-fitting and
rattle.
Cool sound systems in Rabbits require modification or placement of
speakers in boxes. I guess big noise wasn't the thought of the day in
the early '80's. I have two teenage boys so I'm quite familiar with the
limitations!

Subject: [Vwdiesel] speakers
My '82 Rabbit D 4 door has the original VW mono AM/FM radio. It's time
to do something about that. What I'm trying to sort out is what sort of
speakers will fit. When I go to crutchfield.com, my usual source for
information about what fits in what car, they seem to want to put
speakers into the doors. My car has a pair of 3.5" speakers in the dash
and places for a pair of 4"x6" speakers on the rear "deck". What
speakers will actually fit there?
Thanks,
Scott
