[Vwdiesel] Easiest/Quickest way to check engine timing?

I've got an Overland 1.9NA, and think the folks that installed the engine 
MAY HAVE LOOSED THE CAM SPROCKET.

So, of course, that, and the horror stories I have recently heard, brings 
me to this question:

What is the easiest way to check engine timing? I've got all the tools 
(the cam sprocket tool, and the cam lock), and know how to use them. But, 
if there a quicker/easier way to do this?

Just for piece of mind, I want to see if the timing is drifting at all.
