[Vwdiesel] Easiest/Quickest way to check engine timing?

I had a sprocket slip on a cam on a 1.6 NA engine. It was factory torqued
(no PO, no service other than me). When it went, the engine was at
idle (exit ramp on expressway). Damage was dinged piston, dinged
cyl head, and three valves. The sprocket is NOT keyed, and is a friction
fit. Check it out, and then consider over torque, or whatever your
judgement will accept.
