[Vwdiesel] Easiest/Quickest way to check engine timing?

The sprocket is NOT keyed, and is a friction 
fit.

  Just don't use anit-seize on it!  ;-)
  Like Mark said, pull the valve cover, rotate the engine, line up the 
flywheel 
mark and look at the cam slot.  I've never bothered with the feeler gauges. 
If it were that tight a tolerance then most of our engines would self 
destruct 
just between cold and warmed up.  If the cam plate slips in then you're 
good to go, you'll need to pull the semi-circle plug of course.  Checking 
the cam timing has no simple way other than the usual.  Pull the plug 
bolt, screw in the adapter and dial and make sure the cold start lever is 
all the way in and the lever on the pump seats.
