In theory: Static compression would be lower. Haven't heard
of anybody yet that can give 1:1 comparrison so if you DO put in
a 2 notch. Get compression readings on a good cylinder before
pulling the head (oops, too late?) and then after with a 2 notch.
Lower compression could/would make for more difficult starting.
Although cranking speed could increase due to less pressure and
might overcome the loss in pressure.
You may also have higher mileage and power due to lower pumping
losses. I've been debating tearing my Rabbit down and cutting a set
of pistons down for 19:1 just to find out. A shame since it starts so
well now but if it proves worthwhile and does make a starting problem,
there's always ether kits. Fueling would also be a little higher due to
the lower pressure diferential between the injector pressure and cylinder
pressure.

I wouldn't expect it to in any way.

If they're running well they do open up surprisingly clean. We just
usually don't tear into one until it's not running well and it's all gunky.

I'd be inclined to say a straight no. Peak cylinder pressures, operating
temperatures, temperature related stress and expansions won't change.
Those are factors for gasket failure. I doubt we really overpressure them
to death. :-)

That's a shame. I have to say there is one disadvantage to studs. It
makes it much harder to remove the head. In an NA the manifolds are
in the way if left on and on either, carbon in a bolt hole just makes removal
nasty hard. Even with clean holes the head has to come straight up
and that's not easy. Of course you can buy the special tool and pull
the studs after pulling the nuts but then you have the holes to clean
and chase again as well as reinstalling the studs.
