  A pair of long nose vise grips work really nicely.  Clamp the hose shut, 
remove the end.  Seals off the tank, no trying to plug a running hose.  :-)
Of course you'll get run back from the engine end.  We used those all 
the time at the dealer when changing various fuel pumps or filters.  For 
those of you wondering...  IF it cracks the hose, it needed replaced 
anyway and it's better to have it crack while you're working on it than 
while driving down the road.  :-)
