Yes, twas I.  I've come to notice that it is quite a bit more prevalent when
the engine is cold.  Like the first 5-10kms or so, you really have to baby
it, and shift early.  Once temp guage is reading about mid-scale, it seems
to be "normal"....whatever that is.....Like my old 88 Jetta anyways, so I
presume it's normal.

I know you cannot rev a diesel like a gas engine, but when it's cold, you
really REALLY can't rev it at all.
