[Vwdiesel] Timing of 1000 mile retorque?

I'm about 300 miles into a new head gasket on my '82 Westy, but due to 
leave on a 3 week holiday next Friday. I will of course take tools to do the 
retorque, but am not sure when I can stop to do it. How critical is timing on 
this? The engine is running fine, no sign of leaks. Is 1500 miles a problem? 
Should I do it early?
