The greatest advantage to the stirling engine is that it is an external
combustion engine. Coupled with a turbodiesel engine in a stationary setting (e.g.
genset) could prove ultra efficient, as the stirling could be run off the
waste heat of the diesel. Additionally, I have heard that the stirling on its
own can produce a similar amount of power for fuel compared to an internal
combustion engine due to its own heat recovery process. The diesel/stirling combo
would be impressive.
