Much easier to remove the big axle nut and slide the whole axle out. Put it in a vise or whatever. I never needed a press either, for c/v joints. I know Bentley is the only game in town, but it sure leaves a lot to be desired. Good for specs, I guess.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] 91 Inner Right CV Boot
Anyone current on wiggling CV joints around?
On my 91 Jetta (remember the head is off), the right inner
CV joint needs a boot. Since the head is off, and in
the shop, I was thinking about an approach from above.
I was wondering if anyone has slid an inner CV off the transaxle
flange, without pulling the outer CV?
My guess is that it's probably doable, but it may not be. The
likely problems include:
-not getting the inner out of the flange
-not having enough angular play on the shaft to readily pull
the inner CV off the splined shaft, so that the boot can be installed.
(Bentley has scary pictures of hydraulic presses being used to pull
inner CV joints. I don't have clear memories, but I imagine I've
done probably two dozen CV joints, and I can't EVER remember needing
a hydraulic press. I admit to using a rubber mallet.
Comments anyone?
Val
