[Vwdiesel] garrett turbo disassembly complete

My '91 Jetta with 1.6TD has a turbo that can be heard faintly from a small
hole in the vertical cast iron downpipe that goes from the turbo to the
toilet bowl flange. The hole is about 10 inches after the turbo and does
not make much noise but the turbo has just the right volume so you can hear
it spool up or twitter IMO. I suspect that when I seal the hole I won't be
able to hear the turbo and that will be a problem for me as I like the sound
as it helps tell me what the engine is doing and how it is handling loads,
plus I think it sounds cool. ;) I am prepared to install an audio
transducer (microphone) to pick up the turbo whine to restore it if it goes
away with the exhaust system final repair. How and where I can mic the
sound is not clear yet. An ordinary mic won't last if stuffed in an exhaust
pipe near the engine. Perhaps I need a piezo sensor of some sort. I wonder
if a car knock sensor will act as an audio microphone? Ideas are welcomed.

Rob
