Steve it could still be a bad ring; but if /I were you I'd take the valve cover off and check #4 cams and their tappet clearance.

Hi All
I've been reading your emails daily for the last 6 months or so, all very
good reading all very entertaining, thanks. I've got two VW's one a 79
Rabbit and the second a 82 pickup that are pretty sick, the rabbit has
following compression 1) 460psi 2) 460psi 3) 460psi 4) 225 psi. Squirt of
oil doesn't change a thing, It smokes pretty good and when you loosen the
fuel injector nut on cylinder 4 the smoke significantly goes a way. Theres
no extreme pressure in the radiator reserve tank. And the valves are
adjusted correctly. I think I've done everything right, My question is Whats
the next step and what do I look for?
The 82 pickup is basically the same except cylinder 2 and 3 are low and I
purchased this truck non-running and haven't done more than steam clean and
run a compression check, I figure the steps to repair this one will be the
same.
Thanks in advance
Steve Boser
