don't know how, but somehow I slipped a belt or gear or jumped a tooth
(I think slipped rather than jumped b/c problem got worse progressively
over a couple dozen miles)
first white smoke and bucking, low power, then blue smoke, more
lawnmower noise from engine, finally wouldn't run
I'll find out tomorrow what moved when I get in there
but Q for anyone who knows these 2.4L 5-cyl DSLs:
on the crank-to-cam side, what can slip?
can the crank bolt slip?
is there nothing keying the crank pulley to the crank?
how bout the routing of that crank belt?
it goes up and around stuff before it wraps around the crank gear
can any of that stuff move/loosen/mess up timing?
I've had a slipping alt belt on that same pulley I've been neglecting
how bout the cam gear on the crank pulley side?
is that keyed or just friction/torque?
cam gear on the pump side? also unkeyed?
gear on the pump is keyed I know
(hoping it's the gear on the pump side that slipped and not a belt or
anything crank-to-cam)
anyone know if there's a weak spot anywhere where things typically
slip/move?
I replaced these belts several months ago and timing's been rock-solid
for 5000 miles
(running veg oil too, but I don't think that has anything to do with
what happened today)
also, when reassembling, how to best secure everything? anyone using
any kind of 'binding' compound on the cam gears?
any suggestions on any of this welcome
thx
