Rolf,

On the Chevy 305, and all other older Chevy V-8's that I've seen the rockers
have to be loosened enough to yank out the pushrods, then the lifters have
to be pulled which means the intake manifold has to be off the engine to
access the lifter gallery, then you pull the camshaft out of the front
center of the block after removing the crank balancer, timing cover and
timing drive to.access the cam from the front.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.  If you were still driving that older Chevy
you'd likely still be driving.....but you'd still also be using lots of
expensive fuel.  I wrenched and hot rodded chevy engines much of my life but
would not spend a dime on one today.  I have been bitten by the attraction
of small, efficient diesels.
