[Vwdiesel] Temp flasher

I mentioned recently that a friend of mine purchased an '84 Quantum TD. I
have been helping him get it roadworthy (timing belt, brakes, belts, etc.). The
car sat for some time and seems to have its share of intermittent electrical
gliches. The rear wiper will randomly turn itself on and wipe a few wipes. I
think that I have that one corrected. The starter will frequently just
click, but if you try to start it several times in a row it will finally crank.
The most irritating issue currently is that after it has been running a while
the temp flasher will flash. The coolant level is fine. The temp gauge rarely
goes above the flasher dot, and seems to register correctly given warmup time.
Is the sensor for the flasher seperate from the sender for the gauge? Which
is it? At this point I would think it is closing at too low a temp. I have
not used an actual thermometer the engine, but the cooling fan cycles on and
off and the flasher will flash even when the fan is not even on. Also, as
mentioned, the gauge registers fine. Any suggestions?
Andrew
