Nothing seems to be able to munch up a set of rings like a 2 stroke...
Past bikes and a couple 2stroke detroit are my experience with this.  Like
you say, blooie, and it's pieces, and give some more money to Wiseco.

My big old OMC outboard has pinned rings.
The pins failed on 2 of the cylinders in 2 separate years and BLOOIE,
shrapnel.

Didn't hurt the bores, just installed new piston and rings.
OK now for some time.
I have a theory, but, sorry, it's not diesel (sigh)
