My big old OMC outboard has pinned rings. 
The pins failed on 2 of the cylinders in 2 separate years and BLOOIE, shrapnel.

Didn't hurt the bores, just installed new piston and rings. 
OK now for some time. 
I have a theory, but, sorry, it's not diesel (sigh)
