  The manifold doesn't have any really good place to put one.  That is the 
preferred placement.  Downstream is where they usually end up and in 
reality how much drop will you see between a few inches out or a foot 
or so out?  Not much IMO.  Jake managed to drill and tap the turbine 
housing to put his probe in it!  
  Www.dieselpage.com has good pricing on Isspro pyrometers and they 
have them with color coded faces for pre or post placement.  :-)
