[Vwdiesel] Diesel octane or why can you run a diesel engine

Nothing major on this one. The cast steel part at the discharge end of the
pump is sealed to the aluminum part with an O ring. After years of vibration it
finally failed, leaking fuel. Still worked OK; just pissed fuel. I removed the
steel part, cleaned surfaces & replaced O ring. Lapped check valves with
tooth paste while I was at it. Assembly is tricky - lots of parts to coordinate.
As for modification; I wouldn't, except for tweaking the fuel screw. The
inside is simple in design, but very complicated in the way the different parts
interact with each other. Not like a carburetor or gasser fuel injection. TD
pumps have additional functions that respond to boost pressure. I've not been
inside one of these yet.
Get an old pump if you can find one. You will need to make some special tools
to disassemble it; part of the fun. Very beautiful inside, German precision
at it's finest. Excellent alloys that last through decades. Hard to conceive of
the number of revolutions in it's life.
A low mileage pump I would leave intact. Mine was high mileage and soaked in
mouse piss. LOL Very corroded & rusted, but good to learn on. Good luck and as
Hagar says, "have fun".

Bob,

What did you do on the pump your repaired? I'm hoping to pickup a spare pump
along with other parts next week, so I may have something to practice on
(although
it's a low mileage pump from an '82 Vanagon, so might be too nice to mess
with). My
TD pump ran ok, but since I'm rebuilding the engine from ground up, I'd like
to find
out about what I can do to the pump, without spending a ton of $$.
