Maybe his pride & joy, but in concept only. Adolph, if you know anything about his personality, would not have been capable of designing anything as sophisticated and innovative as the original beetle.
Forced air cooling and cabin heat, torsion bar suspension, stamped steel monocoque chassis, aerodymanic shape, engine weight over the drive wheels, transmission and rear axle combined into one unit - these were radical, cutting edge designs back then. To produce this and make it affordable for the working Joe was Hitlers dream, and to his credit, but Porsche was the genius behind it.
And the original engine was 25 HP - very similar to the 36 HP we know - same basic design, slower turning.

It is a Wal-Mart car. -- brilliant design ---and
the
pride and joy of the Fuehrer ---who designed it ---as follows . The engine ? he
called in Ferdinand Porche --and said --Ferdinand can you design an engine for
what
I have in mind. ----Ferdinand went to work ---and the product was the all time
champ of Car engines of ALL time. ---the 36 HP Beetle engine. The many flyboys
here will agree with me ---they know Continental 65 HP and Lycoming
65 HP engines ----and they are for Aviators what the VW Beetle engine is to
driving
simple people all over the place.
